## Definition

**Thought calculator** is the metaphor used in this material for AI: a **tool**, a **function**, that augments thinking rather than replacing it — a calculator for thoughts.

Linus Lee of Notion’s AI team suggests that AI is less a rival intelligence and more a **tool**, a **function**, even a “whatever mathematical object” that augments thinking rather than replacing it. On that view, AI becomes a **thought calculator** — a calculator for thoughts. [^3e5745ab-279e-5154-9c22-9015dba70a32@434]- **AI as a tool**: a function that augments thinking — a thought calculator.
