English-to-English translation

In the channel's captured material, English-to-English translation is not translation between languages. It is the practice of rendering English text into other, plainer English — the same language in, the same language out — typically with an AI assistant doing the restatement. The term belongs to the reading-and-research workflow covered in the chapter on Learning, Reading, and Research with AI. In that context, restating a dense passage or a jargon-heavy explanation in plain English functions as a reading scaffold: it opens up an unfamiliar idea so it can be explored further, as part of a broader pattern of using AI to build reading scaffolds rather than outsource judgment to it. The restatement is a starting point, not a verdict; the final sense of what a passage means stays with the person reading. The term is drawn from the Nat Eliason episode on using ChatGPT for reading, writing, and everyday work, which is the channel's captured source for this usage.
