vibe check
What a vibe check is
A vibe check is an informal, hands-on test of a newly released AI model, run by the Every team against real daily work — programming, writing, design, and knowledge work — to understand what the model is actually good and bad at. It is usually run live (sometimes in front of viewers, especially when there is no early access) or over about a week of use.
How the channel uses the term
- Live testing on release day: when the team got no early access to Anthropic's Opus 4.7, they ran the vibe check live as the model dropped, testing benchmarks, codebase rewrites, and investor-report writing. - Week-long testing: for GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.6 Sol, the team used the model for roughly a month of real work before delivering a verdict. - Side-by-side comparisons: a vibe check often compares the new model against rivals (Astra, Soul, Opus, Fable) on the same tasks. - Structured verdicts: results come out as concrete strengths (e.g., improved visual output), weaknesses (e.g., flat, segmented writing), and a bottom-line recommendation — sometimes summarized as a color rating like a yellow for daily coding.
Why it matters
The point is to go beyond hearsay and benchmark scores: a vibe check reveals how a model behaves on your kind of work — speed, cost, tone, instruction-following, and the inevitable AI tells — so you can decide which model fits which task.
